Oh, Evana. So riveting as always. Thank you for pouring your heart out--there is so much here that we can all resonate with. Your Walker Percy scene reminded me of the Julia Jacklin song "You Were Right." It's about how when someone you love shares their taste, it can be oppressive, even if you do ultimately like the book/movie/restaurant they are recommending. And, the meaning and ownership of those things can be so different once you've moved on from the relationship. Give it a spin if you don't already know and love it!
This piece came out just when I need it the most. Your two short, yet so visceral, paragraphs on ‘What If’s mirror so much of how I’ve been feeling lately, hopping from one part of my unstable and unpredictable life to the next. In such uncertain times, it’s tough not to look back at yourself and wonder if you made the right choices after all. I loved your take on it. Thank you so, SO much
Thank you for sharing this, your writing reminds me of Ming La’s- an arresting honesty without pretense. the temporality of the present comes out in your writing - no matter how much you want to stuff it in a shoebox. what you remind us is that a new present presents itself as the old turns to past. i remember the scene you reference from normal people, what happens when we see the present as the past - something static rather than something that continuously reveals itself
Just skimmed on the point of falling to sleep no real idea of what it’s about but got a lot of pleasure from sliding over the words and idea look forward to reading it properly or maybe improperly again another time another place another mood. Maybe it won’t be so much fun when I’m more focused and mr brain working properly..whatever that means
god i feel this so keenly, down to every word, even the re-reading sally rooney (except my go-to is beautiful world where are you). thank you for your writing it is so needed.
